The Voice of Big Brother

For years, conspiracy theorists have claimed that the U.S. Government has been developing tools and weapons that could force people to hear voices in their heads. According to a March 21st, 2008 article published at New Scientist, they were right. In a series of recently declassified documents, government officials admitted that they had developed five non-lethal technologies that were previously thought to be solely the stuff of science fiction and conspiracy theorists.
One of the technologies uses the Frey Effect, which postulates that microwaves can be used to project spoken words directly into a victims ear, effectively making it a voice in your head. In one test, the numbers 1 through 10 were successfully sent across a room to a group of volunteers.
Some of the other technologies reported have been called “potentially torturous”, including one that could induce an epileptic seizure in a victim. Others have matured to completion since the report was first released in 1998, like the laser dazzlers used in Iraq, and the Long Range Acoustic Device used to repel pirates off the coast of Somalia.
Other devices in the report have been abandoned, though in at least one instance it is noted that the technologies to create the weapon are “readily available”.
